Six strings for two heels

An evening of exceptional flamenco performance with two of Spain's most highly regarded artists.
Galway 1st September, Cork 2nd September, Dublin 3rd & 4th September

This coming September will see the welcome return to Ireland of virtuoso composer and guitarist Juan Antonio Suárez “Cano” and award-winning dancer and choreographer Concha Jareño. Proudly presented by Peña Flamenca El Indalo, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes Dublin, the Agencia Andaluza para el Desarrollo del Flamenco, and funded by the Arts Council, this tour offers Irish audiences a unique opportunity to enjoy a level of flamenco artistry normally reserved for the stages of Spain and the more established international flamenco festivals.

The Spanish artists, who performed separately in Dublin in 2009, are returning to tour Ireland with a new production called "Seis cuerdas para dos tacones" ("Six strings for two heels"), which they premiered in June 2010 at the annual Flamenco Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico, delighting the audience and earning great critical acclaim. Members of the audience described the experience as breathtaking and many were moved to tears.

Nathalie Moyano González, Director of Peña Flamenca El Indalo, says, “I am thrilled at the thought of Cano and Concha touring Ireland together for the first time. I have seen them perform at the most renowned flamenco festival in Andalucía and there are no words to describe the experience. Their artistry will fill you with emotion and shake you to the core. I can't wait to bring them to audiences across Ireland in Peña Flamenca El Indalo's first tour. We are proud to be able to offer a platform for Spanish flamenco artists in Ireland. By working with the institutions both in Spain and Ireland, we hope to build a strong cultural bridge between the two countries.”

Recently both performers have worked with world-renowned Spanish film director Carlos Saura, perhaps best known outside of Spain for his films "Carmen" (1983) and "Flamenco" (1995). Much of Saura's cinematic work serves to document flamenco as a living and evolving art form. Concha Jareño worked with Saura in the stage production "Flamenco Hoy", which premiered at Madrid’s Veranos de la Villa festival in August 2009, and Cano participated in "Flamenco, Flamenco", the sequel to "Flamenco" which will premiere on August 30th at Spain's Pavilion at Expo Shanghai 2010.

The tour opens in Galway on Wednesday 1 September, where the artists will perform in The Live Lounge at the Radisson Blu Hotel. From there it moves to The Firkin Crane in Cork on Thursday 2 September, and finishes with two dates in The Helix in Dublin on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 September.  In addition to the performances, the tour schedule includes a number of dance and guitar workshops to be held around the country. This rare opportunity to study with such visionary performers should be of particular interest to dancers and musicians.

About Peña Flamenca El Indalo

Peña Flamenca El Indalo is a Dublin-based not-for-profit organisation, founded in 2009 by aficionados and artists to promote and enrich the culture of flamenco in Ireland through education and entertainment. In addition to promoting large events, the peña continues to be active on a local level organizing regular classes, workshops and informal shows. The peña also operates a club for flamenco aficionados. Members pay an annual fee that helps to subsidize the peña's activities for the year, in return for which they receive discounts to events and other benefits, and access to the peña's library of educational materials.
